Today, I attended a new convention called "Stan Lee's ComiKaze" in Los Angeles. This convention is only two years old and this was my first time there.

While attending ComiKaze, I was hugged by Veronica Taylor, Weird Al Yankovick, Andre of Black Nerd Comedy, and JIM FREAKIN' CUMMINGS!!!!
...yeah. I am DEFINITELY coming back next year!! This convention RULES!! ^_^

And don't worry, photographic evidence of these events will be coming soon.

Winter/Holiday Art Requests Open

I know it seems a bit early to start opening up requests for Christmas/Winter/Holiday art. But I want plenty of time to make you guys really nice drawings/presents. Also, Chanukkah is happening hella early this year (it also happens to start on my birthday). So I have to open it up NOW just in case anyone wants something with a Jewish/Chanukkah theme (or a Thanksgiving theme). XD

Rules:
--It doesn't have to be related to a specific holiday like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukkah, Festivus, etc. If there's something you just REALLY want to see me draw "just because", feel free.

--Don't feel bad if I can't get your request done before New Years. Its nothing personal. Real life just takes up most of my time and sometimes I get spacey and just forget things.

--Keep your requests simple. For example, please don't ask me to translate your LONG, epic, 10 chapter fan-fiction into a comic.

--This should go without saying, but nothing pornographic, perverted, or fetishy. Romance is fine. Just keep the raciness of the requests at a PG-13 or lower.

Looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with!

Fan-Art/Review: More reasons why I hate Sly 4.....

For those of you who have never played a Sly game....I swear, I'm not exaggerating here! The differences between the original trilogy and the sexist abomination that was Sly 4 really is THIS EXTREME!!

Seriously, when you actually sit down and compare how Sly is characterized in the Sucker Punch trilogy vs Sly 4, the difference is....pretty stark. Mainly regarding the way he treated women.

Just take a moment and think about that speech he delivers to Tsao after that boss fight in the Bamboo forest (if you need to look it up on YouTube to refresh your memory, I'll wait)

That "Jing King isn't property" speech is one of the few moments in the original trilogy where Sly gets visibly pissed off at the person he's fighting (instead of rattling off witty quips before kicking their ass). After Tsao tells Sly that he took Jing King simply because "women are too stupid to know what's best for them", Sly calls Tsao "the worst" of all the bad men he's dealt with.
Remember now, not only has Sly faced a LOT of enemies who have done FAR worse things than act like a misogynist douche, he is also currently traveling with a dude who helped MURDER HIS PARENTS IN COLD BLOOD!!
...so...yeah, I get the impression that Sly isn't cool with disrespecting women (no matter who they may be). And that sexism is VERY high on his personal list of mortal sins.
And I don't think it's a coincidence that Sly started coming around to the Panda King and giving him the benefit of the doubt immediately after he realized what a sexist jerk General Tsao was

Speaking of the Panda King, keep in mind that Sly got angry/upset about the treatment of a woman that, in addition to being a total stranger to him, is the daughter of someone he DESPISES for a very good reason. He has NO REASON to give a damn about Jing King's plight. And, while it may not be entirely ethical, most people wouldn't blame Sly if he had simply said to the Panda King, "You're a monster and working with you isn't worth the risk that comes with storming Tsao's compound. So save your own freakin' daughter!"

So, when you think about all that, it's pretty inconceivable that he would strong-arm the woman he claims to love into doing something she clearly finds humiliating/degrading. And I highly doubt that Classic-Sly would allow even Bentley to spout sexist nonsense at ANY woman without being called out on it (ESPECIALLY if said woman was somebody important to him).

tl;dr the fact that Sly had an entire speech dedicated to the notion that "woman are not objects to push around" in Sly 3 makes his behavior in Sly 4 even MORE appalling. Because no decent man who honestly believes in treating women with respect would essentially FORCE the woman he loves into a sexually degrading AND dangerous situation just so he and his dudebro friend can watch her shimmy around against her will in a bellydance costume

A question for the more computer savvy people out there....

My computer has been acting spazzy lately. And today, when I tried to log in to the administrators side of my PC, I got a message that said "User profile service failed the log in. User profile cannot be loaded". The guest side of the computer still works fine (I'm using it now). But I can't access anything from the admin side or do anything that requires an admin password.

So....what exactly does that mean? Is there a way to fix this (or at least get into the administrator side via a "back door")?
Or should I just cut my losses and get a new computer/hard drive/whatever?
Also, before this happened, my computer reset itself for no reason when I didn't use it for a few days (ie my desktop was wiped clean and all my files had been moved to the C drive). I was able to recover everything; but seeing a blank desktop instead of my usual wallpaper when I turned it on gave me quite a scare!

Luckily, I backed up all my files just the other day, so I don't have to worry about losing all the artwork I just scanned (among other things) if I dump this computer for a new one. But I'd rather not spend money on a new computer if this problem is easily fixable.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

Art Post: Most bizarre crossover/crack-ship ever: Ariel and Darkwing Duck

$

I recently bought some back issues of the old "Disney Afternoon Comic Collection". And these covers absolutely cracked me up:

...and now I cannot stop myself from imagining how much funnier The Little Mermaid would have been if Ariel had obsessed over Darkwing Duck instead of Prince Eric.
I posted these images on Tumblr, and earthstar_moon decided to play the devil on my shoulder and encourage me to draw this AU crack ship. So the upcoming comic is her fault, not mine! XD

The first page is done in stick figures because I just wanted to get the idea on paper quickly. And also because I MAJORLY suck at drawing cartoon anthropomorphic ducks (seriously, my hat goes off to Carl Barks and Don Rosa)

If you can't tell by my lousy stick figures, Darkwing commissioned that awful statue and is transporting it home via boat. Launchpad thinks it's insulting and "accidentally" shoves it overboard.

And here's where we meet Ariel

And here's where Ariel shows her love for Darkwing:

I decided that, in my version, she would steal her father's trident instead of selling her voice to a witch. Because the idea of her blasting The Liquidator with it was just funny. And my idea is to make Ariel come across as a weirdo stalker-type because it kinda fits her (don't pretend it doesn't! That statue scene in the original movie is kinda creepy when you think about it too hard).

Also, the "alien with a fist-butt" line is a reference to an episode of Darkwing Duck where it was revealed that humans like us come from outer space in the Duck universe. So, in Darkwing's POV (ie a dude who lives among animal-people and has only seen human beings as aliens) would view Ariel as a bizarre alien with a fish-butt.

If there's interest in this story, I will continue it! I have some free time coming next week!

Fan-Art: How Disney's Frozen should have ended....

I'll do a real review of this movie later on. But for now, have a goofy fan-comic!

Also, this should go without saying, but this comic contains major spoilers for the end of the movie.

The risk of homicidal domestic violence isn't the only thing a princess should worry about when marrying a guy she barely knows.....

Seriously, I loved Frozen (I saw it in the theatre with my sisters and it was the perfect bonding movie for us). But I thought that Anna hooking up with Kristoff at the end kind of undercut the moral of the Hans plotline (ie marrying a guy you barely know is stupid and real romance is more complicated than a fairy tale). Plus, as nice as Kristoff is, I get the feeling that a dude who was raised in the woods by Trolls with ZERO concept of "personal boundaries" wouldn't be able to maintain a relationship with a princess who is used to sleeping in a palace and using proper indoor bathroom facilities. Just sayin'.

I still think the movie is great and a step in the right direction for Disney regarding how they handle female characters (even though I still have issues with how bland and identical the female designs are in their big-ticket CGI films). But the movie would have been perfect if only Kristoff and Anna had ended up as friends (or their romance had been only lightly implied at the end of the film instead of blatantly spelled out). Having Anna hook up with Kristoff after knowing him only a tiny bit longer than Hans makes her come across as kinda stupid.

Talespin/Ducktales teaser comic

I had about a week off for the holidays. This is what I chose to do with it...

I already have an idea for how I want the rest of this story to play out. The only thing holding me back is the fact that I suck MASSIVELY at drawing the Disney Duck characters. But I'll probably try anyway because I REALLY dig this idea!

Random Artist Notes:
-This plot bunny attacked when I realized that, according the the timelines of both Talespin and Ducktales, Scrooge isn't much older than Molly and Kit (Talespin takes place around the 1930s and Ducktales takes place in the late 80s/early 90s). And I thought it would be cool if Scrooge's last big adventure before striking it rich in the Yukon involved him going on a treasure hunt with Molly and Kit while those two attempt to run Rebecca's airplane delivery business all alone for the first time

-I aged them up in this comic so that Kit is 19 and Molly is 14. And I made Kit the same height as Molly because I figure the poor boy will always be short for his age and that Molly will eventually be taller than him (luckily, by the time Kit's an adult, he's secure enough not to be bothered by it).

-I like to think that Molly and Kit grow up to be best friends and start considering themselves "siblings" LONG before Rebecca and Baloo make it official. This view mostly comes from one issue of the Talespin comics (which I scanned here because it's AWESOME) where Molly straight up TELLS Kit that she feels this way and introduces him as "my brother" when a stranger asks who he is.

-I imagine that Molly would grow up to be very smart and a savvy business woman just like her mom. And I think it will be fun to pit her against a cheap bastard like Scrooge McDuck as her first client.

-Here are some of the "brainstorm pages" for this idea. The first page has some good poses; but my feeble attempts to draw Scrooge without a reference should make it obvious why I'm hesitant to continue this story >_<

Figuring out the layout....

Figuring out the poses...

So, what do you guys think? Would you like to see this one get finished? Will you be able to overlook my inability to draw Scrooge McDuck correctly if I do another comic?

Princess Jellyfish: Art and review

Princess Jellyfish Review:

Every female nerd should watch this series. Seriously, this show does an AMAZING job of capturing the dynamic of a bunch of oddball, dorky chicks living under one roof. It’s hard to articulate my love for this show in a traditional review, so I’ll just be lazy and make a list of reasons why I think this should be required viewing for everyone…

    1. It delves into the lives of a group of women without EVER sexualizing them. Most of the main women living in the “Sisterhood Dorm” are weird looking (or downright ugly). This is a refreshing change of pace from virtually every other TV show in the universe that sticks glasses on a model and expects us to believe that she’s spent her entire life being ignored by boys because of her appearance.
Granted, Tsukimi (the lead female character) is cute. But even after her obligatory “My Fair Lady” makeover, she isn’t a sex pot or a supermodel. So the show avoids falling into the “She’s All That” trap

    2. Speaking of the girls’ appearances, another thing I love about the show is the fact that EVERY SINGLE FEMALE CHARACTER LOOKS DISTINCT! One of my biggest artistic pet peeves is when a professional artist can draw countless diverse male characters but can only bring himself to draw one or two different women and just palette swap them over and over (I have dubbed this phenomenon “Clone Girl Syndrome”). WAY too many shows/artists suffer from this; and anime is a notorious repeat offender. So this show is a breath of fresh air for the character designs alone. The fact that the story is good is just icing on the cake.

    3. It explores both the good and bad side of being an “otaku”. The way all the girls escape into their hobbies is clearly a coping mechanism for dealing with being treated like outcasts their whole lives. And, while its fun for them (and fun for us to watch); it’s also kinda sad and unhealthy. And some of their behaviors hit me pretty close to home.
For example, when Tsukimi brings a new “girl” to their Friday night dinner party, her room mates are horrified to find out that Tsukimi’s new friend is one of ‘The Stylish’ (which is their slang word for popular, pretty people who wear fashionable clothes). And they’re really nasty to Kuranosuke despite the fact that s/he brought in a bunch of expensive food and was nothing but nice to them. The girls in the sisterhood let their past experiences block them off from meeting new people and getting to know a really rad new friend. Being bullied and ostracized turned them into assholes. And that just sucks.

…..I want to gush more, but anything further would be a spoiler. And I REALLY want everyone to discover this series on their own. Go check it out! Funimation has the first episode on YouTube for free (in both sub and dub), so you have no excuse not to at least preview it!

ART: Tried my hand at this "screencap redraw trend"

I've seen a lot of "screencap redraw" posts on Tumblr (basically, people take a screenshot from a show/game/whatever and redraw it in their own style). And I decided to try my hand at it for Sly Cooper.

First up, here's a re-draw of the first game (I did it from memory, so it's a little off):

And here's the end of the third game:

I'm getting a little better with using the tablet to draw/color stuff. Unfortunately, for some reason, Photoshop doesn't have an easy shortcut for drawing simple, straight lines. So my attempts to draw backgrounds or anything else the requires straight (or slightly diagonal) lines look like crap. If there are better digital drawing programs out there for Luddites like me, I'd love to hear about them!

Anyhoo, here's my latest attempt. Coloring one of my dopey Sly Cooper romance pictures!

Even more tablet practice!

In case you haven't heard, a Jem and the Holograms live-action movie is in the works. And the film makers are scouting FANS to work on things like casting and costuming. Naturally, one would assume that this will lead to either total AWESOMENESS, or a complete and utter trainwreck of a film (either way, it'll be entertaining LOL).

That said, the Jem movie will get all of my money and my love if they opt to cast these gals. Even if you're not a Jem fan, just check out their audition music video. It's AMAZING!!!!

Fan-Comic and Review: Red Hood and the Outlaws issue#1.....in a nutshell

$
0
0
A friend of mine insisted that I give “Red Hood and the Outlaws” (or, as I like to call it, “The Adventures of Douchebag & Dudebro”) a chance because Scott Lobdell is a totally awesome writer and he MUST have a good reason for screwing over Starfire’s character (both literally and figuratively) in the New 52 reboot. I tried the first issue. And this comic is basically the impression it left on me regarding Jason Todd and Roy Harper’s, er, “partnership” with Starfire.

==

REVIEW/SUMMARY

Basically, Roy Harper is surprised that Starfire doesn’t remember the names of people like Cyborg, Beast Boy, and Dick Grayson (implying that Starfire USED to have a normally functioning brain/memory back when Roy last saw her). And, instead of being upset, curious, and/or concerned about Starfire’s brain being broken, Roy has sex with her. Because intense nymphomania just happens to be a side effect of Starfire’s brain-injury. And I guess the nymphomania is a new development because Roy used to hang with her and this is the first he’s hearing of her desire to screw every human male she gets close to despite not being particularly attracted to them.

Jason Todd’s dialogue in the beginning of the book tells the reader that he uses her as a sex toy, too. Neither of them care that Starfire’s brain has apparently degraded to the point where she can’t do anything aside from throwing star bolts, posing erotically, and humping any phallic object that comes within 10 feet of her. Neither of them think to, say, contact the Justice League and see if any of them have info on how to treat brain trauma in Tamaranians. Or contact Dick Grayson and/or the other Titan members to find out if they have any idea what caused her mental dysfunction to begin with. NOPE! They just take advantage of a mentally compromised female comrade because they want to get their rocks off!
I guess Lobdell believes that boys should never say “no” to sex even if the woman in question is clearly mentally compromised. Because stopping to make sure that the woman is 100% capable of giving consent would just kill the mood.

FUCK! THIS! BOOK!

I don’t care if Starfire’s dysfunction gets explained later. I don’t care what kind of bullshit revelations Lobdell pulls out of his ass to justify turning a previously loving and EMOTIONAL character into a brain-dead piece of fan-service for sleazy “Comic Book Guys”. Issue #1 of “The Adventures of Douchebag & Dudebro” was supposed to pique my interest and get me interested in where the story is going (and the New 52 universe as a whole). But all it did was disgust and repel me. The rapey treatment of Starfire made me feel EXTREMELY uncomfortable. And Lobdell’s writing made it clear that this book is NOT made for me (or any other female). It is made for basement dwelling man-children whose idea of female “empowerment” is wearing bikinis 24/7 and having multitudes of loveless, commitment-free hookups with any loser willing to drop his pants.

Also, while this doesn’t have anything to do with the book’s content per se, I just want to say that it does not surprise me that Lobdell has been revealed to be hella creepy in real life.
And, btw, that part at the end of my comic where Roy says that Scott Lobdell told him that Starfire being used as the Team Bicycle by her two asshole comrades is a sign of "female sexual empowerment"...I did NOT make that up. Scott Lobdell actually believes that his version of Starfire is a shining example of a woman owning her bodily autonomy and refusing to be slut-shamed.
