NO SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS, PLEASE!!! I HAVEN'T FINISHED THE GAME YET!!!!!

I doubted that this game would live up to the hype. But...wow.
I don't want to dub it a masterpiece before I get to the ending (sadly, I've seen lots of games start great only to crap out in their final hours). But so far this one is blowing me away (and I normally HATE the survival/horror/shooter genres)

The way Ellie was handled REALLY surprised me (in a good way). Modern games have a lot of.....issues when it comes to handling female characters (**cue obligatory rant about the-game-that-shall-not-be-named**). And games don't do much justice to kid characters, either. But Ellie's behavior and dialogue actually feels REAL! Her dialogue feels like it's being delivered by a teenage girl and not some 30-year-old male writer's idea of what a teenage girl would sound like.

It's so jarring to see a female lead character in a game actually behave like a human being instead of spank material and/or a lame plot device. And I'm torn between enjoying it and cynically waiting for a fridge to drop on her.

This next drawing has a slight spoiler for the middle of the game, so it's going under a cut:

===

I made the mistake of finishing Sam&Henry's chapter right before I had to go to work. The scene with Ellie, Sam, and the transformer toy (and the scene that took place right afterward) got me so emotional I had to draw this on my break! I didn't have references handy, so forgive me if the characters look off.

EVERY comment in this cartoon is based on DA comments and notes that I've actually received.

Sadly, a frightening amount of people seem to think that an artist's time has no value and that it's a personal slight if we don't IMMEDIATELY draw a stranger's random art request. And a LOT of people also seem to think that it's perfectly okay to send unsolicited requests to draw gross fetish/porn art to artists that clearly aren't into that sort of thing.

I'm grateful that people like my work. But it would be nice if I didn't get so many creepy comments and requests.

I already wrote a gushing review about the genius of this game's story and the brilliance of it's ending. Now, it's time to show the game some more affection in the best way I know how: STUPID PARODY COMICS!!!!!
...and, let's face it, Joel and Ellie desperately need some levity in their lives.

This comic is based on one of my gameplay experiences. I was in a stairwell. There were about 4 or 5 guys shuffling around together in the nearby room. I placed a scissor-bomb right outside the door and waited for them to cross the threshold. Meanwhile Ellie was just chilling in the room right in front of them. I thought nothing of it (since enemies can't see your allies in this game), until Ellie LAUNCHED HERSELF ONTO ONE THUGS FACE LIKE AN INSANE KAMIKAZE NINJA!!!!!

Naturally, her victim's screaming caused them to scatter around, my carefully placed bomb only killed ONE GUY, and I was discovered (and slaughtered) by the rest of them. So much for my brilliant strategy! XD

Overall, Naughty Dog did a good job of making sure Joel's allies never got the player killed via stupid AI (and they were even helpful at times). But clearly there were still a few bugs here and there.

P.S. Please excuse the slight sloppiness of the comic. I drew it on a lunch break at work (and tweeked it later in Photoshop)

Don't worry Jo & Stu! I didn't forget! I just got distracted by life. ^_^;

For those who don't know, I've been collaborating with earthstar_moon and gullwhacker to make an AU-version of Sly Cooper 4 because the actual Sly Cooper 4 was sexist and horrible. So far, we've just thrown together short stories and random doodles. But it's a very fun and cathartic way to vent some steam and imagine how good a forth game could have been if it wasn't written by perverted furries.

Onto the brainstorms!

Here's some more ideas for Sleigh McCooper's family:
The decision to make Mrs Sleigh a bear may or may not have been inspired by the movie Brave. ^_^

Now for some random humanizations...

And, last but not least, some doodles featuring my favorite thing about this AU project. Carmelita and Penelope as a pair of badass BFFs!

I imagine this conversation happens right before Penelope makes Carmelita a high-tech pair of glasses that function similar to how Sly's binocucom functioned in the games.

I think Penelope would design them to look like normal glasses both to make them inconspicuous and to make it so Carmelita can read things without having to pull out a set of reading glasses.
Also, I kinda like the idea that Carmelita has a slight vanity streak when it comes to glasses (and that Penelope knocks it out of her). XD

Before the wank begins, let me make it clear that I'm NOT trying to make light of suicide. I'm just mocking DC's latest attempt to drive away it's dwindling female fanbase.

I made this doodle as a response to DC Comic's current art contest to win a job drawing the upcoming revamped Harley Quinn comic book series. Basically, aspiring artists are being asked to show their skills by drawing Harley attempting suicide in a variety of "hilarious" ways. And one of the things they're asking the entrants to draw is:
""
PANEL 4
Harley sitting naked in a bathtub with toasters, blow dryers, blenders, appliances all dangling above the bathtub and she has a cord that will release them all. We are watching the moment before the inevitable death. Her expression is one of “oh well, guess that’s it for me” and she has resigned herself to the moment that is going to happen.

Last but not least, "Pup Daphne is Best Daphne"

Prepare for rambling...
The Pup Named Scooby Doo version of Daphne Blake is the best version ever made. No one will ever convince me otherwise!

It has always baffled and annoyed me that the "Dumb Fred" characterization from Pup was used in future Scooby incarnations; but Daphne's cynical/snarky/vain characterization was never used again. Not only did it add edge and personality to Daphne's character, but it was more fun to root for her and Fred as an item when she showed her "affection" by calling him a gullible moron. Current incarnations just have her act like a twitterpated Freddy fangirl and it's just...lame.

Also, Fred being a huge dumbass (and a bit of a jerk) worked in Pup because it fit the wacky tone that show was going for. It does NOT work when inserted into a pretentious reboot that expects you to watch a show about a talking dog and a squad of loathsome teenage assh*les and take it 110% seriously!!!!
/rant

tl;dr Pup Named Scooby Doo totally rules! ^_^

Artistic impact....

So...a while back I made a tribute post to Carl Steven (the actor who played Freddy in A Pup Named Scooby Doo). Turns out he died in 2011 at the age of 37. Finding out that a guy with so much talent (he helped re-define Fred's character when he was only 12-years-old) died so young made me very sad. So I thought it would be nice to post something to express how much I admired his work.

I didn't think anything of it until today. When Carl's mom left a comment on the page saying that she loved the picture and thought it was a great tribute to her son.
....yeah. When I saw that comment, I almost burst into tears.

It never even occurred to me that one of his family members might see that post (if it had, I would have drawn it better). And it just blows me away that his mother not only saw it, but actually liked it and felt compelled to let me know.

I guess this goes to show that you can NEVER predict what kind of impact your work will have once you put it on the internet for all the world to see. Even if said work is just a piece of Scooby Doo fanart expressing your love for a 20-year-old kiddie cartoon.

Cosplayer Problems...

I'm thinking this might become a series...

First up: "Humor Fails"

Artist's notes:
This is something that actually happened to a friend of mine at SDCC.

The ONLY reason that Jedi Dude didn't receive a beatdown from the guys in our group was because they were fairly certain that Jedi Dude had some sort of...."mental problem".

The moral of the comic is this: Conversing with cosplayers is fine. But it isn't cool to make comments/jokes/whatever about the cosplayer's race when you do not know them personally (and therefore don't know how they would take a joke like that). And, when in doubt, just politely ask for a photo, give them a thumbs up, and leave them the heck alone.

Second Comic:"Overzealous Vendors"

Some booth vendors at the cons just can't take a hint...

I know this is more of a general convention problem than a specific "cosplayer problem". But the idea came to me and I just rolled with it. Also, this happened to me while I was in costume; so it counts! XD

I recently came to the realization that I don't draw enough Naga. This needs to change:

And here is Naga's most likely reaction upon meeting Gourry:

Fun fact: my first DA comment upon posting this picture was some fanboy whining that I made Naga too "fat" and providing his shitty, Escher Girl style Naga art as an example of how to draw a "sexy" woman properly. It was hilarious!

And here's some random art I used to test a new red pen

Next up, more Sly Cooper AU comics to ease the pain caused by the-game-that-shall-not-be-named. This comic could fit into the Sly Cooper AU that earthstar_moon and gullwhacker are helping me with. But it can also stand on it's own as a "this is what should have happened" comic

THIS is what their reunion in Sly 4 would have been like if that game hadn't been written by fanboys who cared more about inserting fuzzy T&A in the game than they cared about writing half-decent female characters (and good stories to go with them).

Seriously, this game wasted a GREAT opportunity to showcase these two interacting as platonic buddies. I imagine him teasing her about that old crush pretty much every time Bentley and Carmelita are out of earshot.

ART POST!!

First up, random Inspector Sly Cooper AU series (because I've been neglecting that poor thing)

Next up, a "how it should have ended" comic for the China level of Sly 3.
I decided to try my hand at doing a "How it should have ended" AU in storybook form instead of a comic. Basically, I just put in random scenes and images and accompanied them with text descriptions. It was pretty fun and it allowed me to be less self-concious about how polished the drawings look. Since most of my art gets done at work (where I can't use my fancy light box and T-ruler), I can't really do a lot of polished things these days.

First up, the surprisingly non-awful scratch/brain-storming scribbles:

A.U. COMIC

I adore the original Sly Cooper trilogy. However, one of it's few flaws is the fact that there aren't many female protagonists (though Sly 2 has one of the most awesome female villains EVER). And you rarely see two female characters interact. So I thought it would be fun to re-write one of the storylines in the third game to give the girls stuff to do together.

The canon ending for the China level of Sly 3 is that Penelope (the cute mouse girl) gets kidnapped by a dragon at the end of a rescue mission (the mission involved saving a girl named Jing from a forced marriage to a jerk named Tsao). In my little "what if" story, the boys get kidnapped by General Tsao and Penelope and Jing King have to seek out Officer Carmelita Fox’s help to get them back. I don’t have time to turn this idea into a full comic (and I don’t have the writing skills to write a fic), so I just scribbled the ideas as they came to me.

And here are the story pages:

Page One:

The idea behind this is that the final Jing King rescue mission got botched right after the Panda King got his daughter Jing out of the palace. Tsao noticed her gone before Sly could get Carmelita to take her place. So Tsao sent the dragon after them and the boys were captured while girls narrowly escaped. And Tsao plans to re-acquire Jing King by announcing from the highest rooftop that he’ll kill them if Jing doesn’t return to him within a few hours (since he’s a sexist jerk who believes that two girls wont be able to mount a rescue and that Jing will come running back to him simply because he’s “strong” enough to capture the entire Cooper Gang).

Sadly, since Penelope is still new to the team and woefully unequipped to handle something like this (and Jing is, presumably, not trained to fight or do espionage), the girls seek out Carmelita in the village and ask for her help.

Page Two:
I really dig the first panel. Penelope would totally have a fangirl moment upon meeting Carmelita (since Carmelita is basically a fuzzy Xena). Also, if you replay the original trilogy, you’ll notice that Bentley and Murray always seemed to have a pretty unfair sense of hostility toward Carmelita (instead of acknowledging/accepting that she’s just doing her job like Sly did). So I imagine that Bentley and Murray had some less than flattering things to say when/if Penelope ever asked them about her. XD

As for the second panel, I had fun drawing it (even if I do suck at drawing backgrounds). I like the idea of Carmelita remaining totally collected and focused despite having to make her way through a hostile town full of violent guards while escorting two civilians AND avoiding a patrolling Dragon overhead! The idea here is that Penelope needs to find the location where the boys are being held before she can use her RC car to attempt a rescue. But the dragon prevents her from doing air reconnaissance with her RC chopper. So Carmelita escorts the girls through town so they can find clues to their location.

Page Three:
The girls manage to get to the boys in time. Carmelita goes in ahead of Jing and Penelope to make sure there aren’t any traps and/or guards waiting to ambush them (and Carmelita wastes no time slapping a pair of handcuffs on Sly once the boys are safe). However, the dragon spots them and grabs Penelope (I LOVE that dragon boss fight in the game and cannot bear to ret-con it even for a silly fan-comic AU)

Page Four:
Since it’s clear that Sly is the only one with a shot at getting Penelope down safely, Carmelita lets him go without a second thought.

As much as I loved Sly 3, I think it would have been improved if Sly and Carmelita had a moment or two like this before she dramatically rescued him from Doctor M’s monster at the start of the final chapter. I mean, Penelope and Bentley were able to build up a believable friendship before hooking up (despite their limited screen time together). So it’s a little disappointing that pretty much every “moment” Sly and Carmelita have together in the third game before their dramatic hookup involves her shooting at him.

So...a game called The Last of Us is slowly eating up my life. It hasn't knocked Sly 2: Band of Thieves off my "best games of all time" list yet. But it's coming VERY close to tying with it!

My first play-through was on the easy mode. Then I did a 'new game plus' so I could plow through the enemies like Rambo instead of stealthing my way past zombie"infected" hordes. And now I'm currently re-playing it on the hard mode. And this is something I NEVER do with my games because I never understood the appeal of replaying a game on a masochistic, nigh-impossible difficulty setting. But I this game makes me WANT to. And keep in mind, I normally HATE the shoot-'em-up/spooky/survivor type games.

Also, I turned on the French language track for my hard mode re-play just for funsies (and because I need to practice my rusty Français. XD)

I want to go on about how AMAZING the story is, but I don't want to risk spoiling it for you guys. So I'm just gonna say that I HIGHLY recommend playing this game with a box of tissues handy.

A few weeks back, I was watching a friends daughter while she took care of some stuff at work. To keep her occupied, I brought out my sketchbook and asked her for comic ideas. This is what she came up with...

First she asked for Spongebob. And I apologized to her for my inability to draw him properly (I haven't watched the show in years)

Then she told me all about the Lego Batman Movie she watched the night before (I didn't even know that movie existed!). And started asking for Batman comics. And that's when things got fun!

First, she wanted a Batgirl drawing:

Then she asked me to draw Catwoman running away from a police man and a dog:

===

Then she asked me to draw "Face Guy" and "Question Mark Guy" making a plan together

The next request was more specific. She wanted to see the Joker jumping off a building onto a jet plane to get away from Batman:

Next up, she asked about Superman. She told me I could make him do whatever I wanted. So I drew him flirting with Lois Lane:

At this point, I asked her about the Lego Batman movie. She told me that there was a "Jester Hat Girl" that she really liked but couldn't remember her name (and she had a very cute "OH YEAH" reaction when I asked if the Jester Hat Girl's name was "Harley Quinn"). She said the male villains were mean and wouldn't let Harley drive the car. So she wanted to see a picture of Harley driving. And she wanted me to include "Face Guy" crying because Batman took his coin away (apparently, Two-Face was especially mean to Harley in that movie). And she also wanted Batman to be flying. Here's the picture:

After that, she moved on to Spiderman. She wanted him swinging near a bridge. And she wanted the bridge to have a ketchup truck on it (she was VERY insistent that it be a ketchup truck!).

Later on, I went to a gas station for a quick oil change. A hyper little boy saw me doodling and asked for a picture of Superman vs Hulk with Hulk winning (he was wearing an Avengers shirt, so he was very biased). Here it is:

Draw to music: Blurred Lines

Backstory:
My co-workers like to turn on the radio to liven up the office. Unfortunately, one day one of them chose the "modern pop" station. And, I swear to G-d, the song "Blurred Lines" played at least 20 times throughout the day (seriously, at one point I even started counting!). By the end of the day, I knew all the lyrics backwards and forwards. And I desperately wanted to punch the singer in the throat.

So, this drawing is just my wishful thinking of what I hope went through the guy's mind during that infamous VMA atrocity with Miley Cyrus.

Naga would totally eat up Halloween (and it's abundance of "Sexy [Whatever] Costumes").

And in case you couldn't tell from my messy scribbles, Lina and Gourry are dressed up as Xena and Gabrielle respectively.

I was just drawing random Lina/Gourry fluff when the mini-comic on the bottom-left happened. I'm pretty proud of it considering it was a spur of the moment sketch that took about 3 minutes

One of my favorite Slayers moments is when Lina and Zel get stuck going into the marriage temple as a "couple" and spend the entire walk joking around with each other. I'm pretty sure the"be gentle with me" line was a Crispin Freeman add-lib for the dub and not something that was in the Japanese version. But it was hilarious; so I love it anyway. XD

I solicited my f-list for Halloween themed art ideas. These were the results:

First up: amelia_seyroon
""Something with Adventure Time, maybe?""

Next up is earthstar_moon
""Heh, how about Sly dressed in a catwoman type costume and Carmelita dressed as Batman. XP""

This idea was so good I had to draw it twice. Here's idea #1:

This one can either be a Batman AU or just Human-Sly crashing the police department's Halloween party.

And here's idea #2:

After that, we had a discussion that snowballed into a collaboration on a REALLY kickass fanfic (and some comics and doodles that were almost as awesome as the fic that inspired it). I'll dedicate a proper post to it later. But for now, Check it out here!

I also solicited art requests at the scooby_doo community I moderate. Here are the results of that thread:

First up is ms_verma's request:

""How about Freddy Sherlock Jones investigating the case of missing Halloween candy only to find out it actually were Shaggy and Scooby? I imagine he'd try to blame Red for this and as a result, the girls would be too annoyed to offer him any help with the case... XD""

Next up is rose_red5's request:
""Daphne dressed up as Jem and Velma dressed up Syngery at Halloween party! 80's doll outfits please. With Velma asking why she agreed to this and Daphne answering because you refused to wear one knee sock to dress up like Pizzazz! Bonus points if you can drew Fred, Shaggy, Scooby, Scrappy as the the Holograms!""

It's not exactly what she asked for (I drew these at work and didn't have the word-for-word request on me). But I hope she enjoys them anyway!

And here's my batch of original stuff that I did for fun!

It’s been a while since I practiced on my new tablet. So I went and colored a simple sketch to play around with a fun idea I had.

Regarding Baloo’s design: I know that the “John Goodman look” fits his character/voice the best. That’s why pretty much every artist who humanizes the characters (myself included) has used that type of design. However, it occurred to me that, since Baloo and Shere Khan kept their Indian-sounding names from The Jungle Book, it technically makes more sense for their human dopplegangers to look Indian.
Also, I’m pretty sure no one else has drawn him like this before. So, +1 for originality. LOL

Tl;dr my goal with this one was to make Baloo look like an “Indian John Goodman”. I hope I succeeded.
