FYI, the Lady Godiva thing didn't happen in the movie. I took that from a gag in the original cartoons.
== Peabody & Sherman 2014 review ==
(Possible Mild Spoilers)
I went to see Peabody and Sherman because the reviews assured me that it wasn’t a childhood-destroying mess that spat all over Jay Ward’s grave. And thankfully, they were right!
Peabody and Sherman is a very cute film. The actors cast to play the leads do a great job capturing the spirit of the original characters (even though Peabody’s sharp edges are sanded off a bit to make him more lovable/sympathetic). And Peabody’s love for stupid puns remains intact!
As for the new characters......I liked Penny (and her parents were pretty fun, too). But I wish she hadn’t been forgiven so easily for being such a nasty bully early on. And I REALLY wish the movie hadn’t inserted a cliché romantic angle to her relationship with Sherman. That element was kinda gross (the kid characters are only 7-years-old) and I think it would have been cuter if Sherman warmed up to her because of their shared interests instead of doing so because she has pretty hair.
Thankfully, Sherman’s one-sided crush on Penny isn’t a huge plot point in the movie (it’s pretty much dropped and forgotten mid-way through the story). But other than that minor quibble, the movie is a LOT better than I thought it would be. If you can still get into a matinee for it, please do. Seeing this in a real theatre was a fun experience. A lot of kids were in the room with me and they got REALLY into it during the "fly around in the time machine" scenes.
