Movie Review: Peabody and Sherman 2014

FYI, the Lady Godiva thing didn't happen in the movie. I took that from a gag in the original cartoons.

==  Peabody & Sherman 2014 review  ==
(Possible Mild Spoilers)

I went to see Peabody and Sherman because the reviews assured me that it wasn’t a childhood-destroying mess that spat all over Jay Ward’s grave. And thankfully, they were right!

Peabody and Sherman is a very cute film. The actors cast to play the leads do a great job capturing the spirit of the original characters (even though Peabody’s sharp edges are sanded off a bit to make him more lovable/sympathetic). And Peabody’s love for stupid puns remains intact!

As for the new characters......I liked Penny (and her parents were pretty fun, too). But I wish she hadn’t been forgiven so easily for being such a nasty bully early on. And I REALLY wish the movie hadn’t inserted a cliché romantic angle to her relationship with Sherman. That element was kinda gross (the kid characters are only 7-years-old) and I think it would have been cuter if Sherman warmed up to her because of their shared interests instead of doing so because she has pretty hair.

Thankfully, Sherman’s one-sided crush on Penny isn’t a huge plot point in the movie (it’s pretty much dropped and forgotten mid-way through the story). But other than that minor quibble, the movie is a LOT better than I thought it would be. If you can still get into a matinee for it, please do. Seeing this in a real theatre was a fun experience. A lot of kids were in the room with me and they got REALLY into it during the "fly around in the time machine" scenes.

Prayers for Casey Kasem

Sadly, Casey Kasem (American Icon and original voice of Shaggy) has gone missing among a heated legal battle between his wife and his adult children regarding his health care and estate.

I don't want to speculate about who's at fault because my family went through a similar situation with an elderly relative (minus the mysterious disappearance) and there are always two sides to every story. I'm just putting this up so people can offer prayers, news updates, and share fond memories they have of Kasem.

I've listened to this man's voice my whole life (and it took me years to figure out that the smooth Top 40 DJ and Shaggy were the same person). I REALLY hope he's found soon and that some sort of amicable compromise can be made with his family so he can live out his final days in peace.

RIP Casey Kasem

This is such horrible news. I knew Kasem as "The Top 40 Countdown DJ" long before I learned he was also a prolific voice actor in many of my favorite shows. He was phenomenally talented and, by all accounts, also a good person. So, at the very least, its comforting to know he'll always be remembered as an icon. Though I can't imagine how rough it must be for his children to lose their dad on Fathers' Day.

This news hits me REAL hard both because I'm a fan and because I feel so bad that Kasem's final days were marked by a bitter feud between his wife and children. I dealt with similar circumstances when my Grandfather was dying; and I wouldn't wish that kind of drama and heartache on anyone. And this is also why I REALLY hate seeing news surrounding Kasem's final days get bogged down by folks judging his wife and/or kids when they know nothing about the situation aside from what they hear on television.

I want to end this on a high note, so here's a clip of Kasem's final Top 40 sign off. I have a clear memory of tuning in to listen to this live as a kid (even though I hadn't listened to the Top 40 broadcasts in at least a year) because I just HAD to hear his last one:

RIP Casey

Review: "Girl Meets World" pilot

The Five Stages of Grief you'll go through when Watching the Girl Meets World Pilot

The article linked above pretty much sums up my feelings about Girl Meets World (and I think it's required reading for any nostalgic 90s kids going into the show in the hopes of reliving their Boy Meets World nostalgia).

REVIEW TIME:

I WANTED to like Girl Meets World so bad. But it was just so damn difficult to sit through. The dialogue was painfully forced and unnatural (it made a million references to Cory and Topanga’s spawn “meeting the world” just like her daddy did). And the characters didn’t act like real kids (or real human beings for that matter) at all. Cory-Jr Riley was just a naive follower of her annoying, “bad girl” friend Not-Shawn Maya. And they had a “nerdy” male classmate who was basically a WAY WAY WAY more annoying clone of Minkus. And, because it’s a Disney Channel show, there was also a pretty boy love interest who had the personality of wet cardboard.

The episode made a big deal out of Riley and Maya being super BFFs. But….I didn’t feel it. I saw no reason why Riley would want to be anywhere near that girl, let alone be friends with her and let her get them both in trouble. The show was trying really hard to draw a parallel between the girls and the Cory/Shawn friendship in the original show. But Cory and Shawn actually had chemistry and common interests (so the viewer understood WHY Cory stood by Shawn even when Shawn was being a punk). And unlike Maya, Shawn was a sympathetic character who had reasons for acting the way he did. Girl Meets World lightly implied that Maya has “problems at home”. But she didn’t come across as a troubled girl in the show. She just came across as an entitled, trouble-making brat who constantly roped her idiot friend into her pet causes. I never felt sorry for Maya. I just kept hoping that Cory would expel her for her shenanigans and Riley would punch her in the face.

I was all set to give up on this show entirely. But then that damn Feeny cameo had to give me the warm fuzzies and pull me back in. But if the next episode is this terrible, I’ll just wash my hands of this thing and go relive the original show on DVD.

Sly Cooper/Disney Afternoon cross-over artwork

I've been neglecting my poor livejournal lately, so I thought I'd put up some of my recent cross-over art (even if most people here probably aren't Sly Cooper fans)

Since I've already done a ton of scribbles depicting the Sly characters in the Rescue Rangers Universe (click here to see them), I thought it would be fun to depict the Rescue Rangers in the Sly Cooper universe and see what fun changes can come of it.....

--I figure that, in the Sly Universe, the Rescue Rangers would function as a sort of mercenary private detective agency that specializes in unusual crimes (like the plot of a USA Network show LOL). And that Carmelita would be open to hiring them to help her with cases (because hiring private mercenaries to back her up was something she happily did in Sly 3)

--Since insect people are a thing in the Sly universe (see: The Contessa), I opted to make Zipper a kid sidekick. I imagine he'd be Monty's adopted son in this crossover (kinda like Kit and Baloo in Talespin). And that he would still speak by buzzing because of a speech impediment or something.

--I gave each Ranger a weapon because I figure they'd need them if they're teaming up with someone like Carmelita. Chip would use a whip (like his hero, Indiana Jones), Dale would use a crossbow, Gadget would use a mini-shock pistol, Zipper would use a slingshot, and Monty would use his fists.

--Deciding what footwear they would choose was surprisingly fun. Dale would totally wear socks with sandals!

Talespin/Sly Crossover: Penelope's Feminine Air

A friend suggested that I try inserting some Sly Cooper characters into an actual Talespin episode. So I picked the most obvious choice and inserted Penelope into the episode "Feminine Air" (aka "the episode where every male pilot except Baloo is a raging, sexist douchebag").

Sadly, I couldn't find video of the episode online; so here's a synopsis:

Rebecca starts losing business because some misogynist pilots convince her clients that a woman isn't capable of running an air cargo business (and that Baloo is a lesser pilot because he works for a female boss). Baloo decides to enter (and win) an air scavenger hunt to stick it to the sexist bullies. But only an all-female aviation club will sponsor Higher for Hire. So Baloo disguises himself as a lady to compete in the contest.

ARTIST'S NOTES:

--I watched the episode and tried to find a way to include Penelope that makes sense in the show's canon. Since the audience never sees Wildcat in that episode, it's plausible that he was hanging out with Penelope while doing his own job and never found out what Baloo was up to. And I think he'd be the type to try and convince Penelope to seize an opportunity to be able to fly without having to hide behind a false identity.

--The coconut bra gag is my favorite part. Because I have no maturity whatsoever! XD

--The brilliant idea of Wildcat and Penelope being old buddies came from earthstar

Art Post: Playing with Steampunk designs

I thought it would be fun to tackle Steampunk-style art.

First up, here's my attempt at a Steampunk Electro-Gun. I'm actually REALLY happy with how it came out!

In case you're wondering, this pic is a redesign of this character:

She's Carmelita Fox from the Sly Cooper series. And she was a great character before the forth game went and fridged her. :(

And here's some more attempts at Steampunky designs....

I humanized some of the characters to make designing the clothes and accessories a bit easier. So if you're wondering why some of the drawings feature anthros and some feature people, that's why

I really dig the outfit on the far right! :)

New info on the upcoming "Be Cool Scooby Doo" TV series (including character designs)

A friend on Deviant Art pointed me to this article on the upcoming "Be Cool Scooby Doo" series that includes a picture of the character designs and a description of the series from the producer:

be cool full

My Thoughts:

The design:
I'm not thrilled with the character designs (they're a bit too "Family Guy" for my taste and I don't like that Velma has been slimmed down yet again). Though I do think it's cute/funny that the ONLY change to the outfits was Daphne getting her sleeves shortened and her heels replaced with a practical pair of tennis shoes.
Maybe they'll look better in motion; but that still image looks really bland and unappealing to me. Unless the production design choices (ie the background designs, direction, animation style, etc) are REALLY good, this show's look will take a LOT of getting used to. :P

The Story:
I am excited about the story. No romantic entanglements is a good thing (and I can't help wondering if that line about Mystery Incorporated's use of romance was meant as a dig against it. LOL). And I am VERY happy about the decision to limit Scooby's speech. I know it seems like a minor thing to get excited about. But, IMO, Scooby's character is funnier and more believable as a dog when he isn't given entire paragraphs of dialogue to rattle off. And it's also more in the spirit of the original show (where Scooby often had to pantomime to get his point across because humans couldn't completely understand him).

The Mystery Machine being outfitted with wacky gadgets sounds cool. I'm hoping the show makes Freddy out to be a car nut and/or a gear head. It would be a welcome change from the last couple of cartoons and movies that characterized him as a clueless dumbass

And, because I'm a dork, I looked up Zac Moncrief (the producer for this new show) and he seems to have a pretty good resume when it comes to making animated comedies. His most notable work has been directing on seasons 4 & 5 of Family Guy and Phineas and Ferb. Overall, he has a good record with comedy cartoons. So, if he has a good team of writers and artists backing him up, this series has the potential to be really fun. Here's hoping my prediction ends up being right!

Now I want to know all of your thoughts/predictions/hopes for this show!!

This comic is based on stories I've heard from cosplay girls about ugly jerkwads hypocritically telling them they're not "hot enough" to dress up as a particular heroine.

I also took some inspiration from the Tony Harris incident.

Comic Con villain

So, I had lunch with my sister today and she told me about this awful incident that happened while she was walking with friends at San Diego Comic Con. And I'm posting it here just to verify that it's true and to let all my con-going buddies (specifically, the women) know to avoid this asshole like the plague.

My friend Jimmy (who also witnessed this) did a write up about it on his Tumblr. So I'll just paste his account here (and add emphasis where neccessary):

Kevin Brueck: Comic Con villain

On July 25th, my friends and I were walking down the street towards some place to have lunch during the San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) 2014. A man stops us, asking my cosplayer friend to do a quick interview for his documentary on cosplaying. Which is a common project for filmmakers who attend the con. She signed a release form for the documentary and was ready for the interview.

But once the camera started recording, the host opens up shouting “I’M HERE WITH ONE OF THE COMIC CON SKANKS!” and then continues on with a line of sexually harassing questions. My friend flipped him off and stormed away. The host followed her, continuing on with his questions.

At this point, her friends (including me) surround the guy with a onslaught of obscenities. He explains that it’s just a “prank” and then asks for her to sign a “real” release form. Not only does she refuse, but demands to get the form she signed back. He tells her “no” and then when asked why not, he answers with, “because I said so”.

So I asked him for his name and the name of the youtube channel he works on. He tells me “Kenny Burns” and that he works for youtube.com/pranks.

But that was a lie.

I found out that the name of this disgusting human being is Kevin Brueck and that he has filmed quite a few SDCC related prank videos where he terrorizes cosplayers for youtube.com/break.

This is such a disgusting trend. These cosplayers work long hours and spend an obscene amount of money to make their costume and show it off at SDCC. All of that effort put towards this one weekend out of the year will forever be tarnished by the memory of being humiliated and harassed by this horrible individual.

In one of his videos, he disguises himself as representative of the convention and scares cosplayers with a phony copyright infringement fine.

He needs to be stopped. I want his videos taken off of youtube and I want him to banned from the site as well as SDCC. Please share this story to whatever sites you think would be willing to help us shut down the continuing career of Kevin Brueck, a Comic Con villain!

-Jimmy Purcell.

The Overly Helpful Shop Clerk

I drew this a few years ago and just recently dug it out of an old sketch book and inked it.

This comic was thrown together after a funny incident where I stopped at the grocery store to get some “girlie products” and this very young male clerk (who was stocking a shelf in an adjacent aisle) suddenly felt the need to get all helpful with me.

I don’t think he was trying to be creepy. He seemed to genuinely want to help. But talking to a male in THAT particular aisle is just weird and uncomfortable. So I told him I was on my way out, moved away from there, and didn’t grab the girlie stuff I came in for until he had wandered into another section.

So, yeah, note to any dudes reading this. Chicks NEVER want to spark up a conversation when shopping for feminine products. EVER! So don’t try it!

Fan-Comic: Amelia's second day on Team Slayers

I like to think this conversation between Lina and Amelia happened sometime within her first week as a part of Lina and Gourry's posse.

I always thought it was strange that Amelia never showed any romantic interest in Gourry. Not only is he good looking; but a chivalrous, "knight in shining armor" type seems right up her alley. Then I remembered that Martina gave up on Gourry because he's a dumbass (and she felt that a princess needs a smart husband). So that's why this comic happened.

New cosplay, cons, and other stuff...

Work has been wearing me down lately (I'm working seven days a week now), so I decided to treat myself and book tickets to attend all three days of Stan Lee's Comikaze convention in Los Angeles this Halloween! I even splurged and commissioned a new cosplay from a gal pal of mine who is a master at costume-making. This year, I'm rocking a Sailor Jupiter costume for Halloween/con-season (I've been digging Sailor Moon Crystal lately)!

This will be my first time rocking a mask-free costume in public. So I'm a bit nervous. All my other public cosplays have covered up at least half my face because I tend to look goofy in photographs (and that makes me REALLY self-concious about strangers taking pics of me that are likely to end up on over the internet). So my Princess Kenny costume will be on standby, just in case.

Also, Sailor Jupiter is a bit "sexier" than the stuff I usually wear for cosplay. And that worries me a bit because of a recent incident at SDCC where my sister and some of our friends were chased down the street and reapeatedly called "sluts" by a creeper who couldn't take "NO" for an answer.

BTW, the creeper's name is Kevin Brueck and he has a shitty YouTube show where he harasses con-goers and pulls other stupid pranks (like chasing female cosplayers down the street while calling them "sluts"). If you're in the nerd and/or convention scene, PLEASE spread the word about this guy's douchebaggery. My friends and I are hoping to get him black-listed from future cons (and, on a purely personal note, I want to see this asshole pay for harassing my little sister while she was walking down the goddam street!!!!). If you want to hear this story first-hand from someone who was physically there to witness it, my friend Jimmy wrote about it on his Tumblr page here.

*sigh*
I want to end this on a happy note. So enjoy a picture of my most recent cosplay experience:
